The beginning of a dream

Hudson Belle was born from my love of giving gifts with meaning and making people smile, showing that you care and sending some love.

I didn’t set out to own a gift boutique but as my Nan used to say ‘everything happens for a reason’. I have been a nurse for over 20 years and when I turned 50 in 2018 I knew that I wanted to do something different with my life. Nursing had been a huge part of my life and had taught me a lot about it and how precious it is and I know that this mindset supported me to take the next steps. I love adventure and taking a risk to see if changing something can work and make a difference. Stepping out of my nursing comfort zone and into the unknown world of retail was a huge leap of faith but I knew the ideas I had could work if I tried.

On the same day that I turned 50 I saw a Tweet from The Piece Hall that was asking for businesses to get in touch to rent their last remaining units in this glorious building. I was driving home from my Birthday supper with my brother where I had been gifted a Sid Dickens Memory Block, Aviator a glorious gold bee which held the caption “This tiny visitor messenger of change, bestirred from Winters dream to the work of a new season and the passing of another page”. Two things happened next. I thought how could I get a shop in the Piece Hall and how do I become a Sid Dickens stockist? The rest as they say is history. Within 2 days I was viewing units at the Piece Hall, my head bursting with ideas of how I could create a business idea in totality! I applied to become a Sid Dickens stockist which was like a Dragons Den process. I sourced stockists who would support my ethos of “gifts with love” and started to write my business case.

Six weeks later I got the keys, we opened the door to a new future, a new beginning, a different way of life, something that I knew would be so different to what I was used to but also something I knew would fill my heart with joy. I applied to go part time in the NHS so that I could support opening the shop and enlisted the help and support of my wonderful family and friends to hold my hand over the coming months to make my dream became reality. Here we are 18 months later and it has been amazing, I can’t say there has been one second where I have thought “What have I done?” We have just gone with it, settled into the Piece Hall family, settled into new routine, met some incredible people, found some amazing suppliers and truly had the best 18 months ever.
